Dear Diary,

Tonight, my friends and I killed a giant glowing scorpion in the basement of Nighthold. He had lots of little scorpion buddies so we killed them too.

Next week I think we'll kill the genie from Aladdin in the next room over, if we can get through the trash mobs.

Mythic Cenarius and Xavius Down! Dec 21, 2016 - 10:09 PM PST

Merry Christmas new Sargeras friends! Tonight I was pretty bored so I went into Mythic Emerald Nightmare and soloed Cenarius. He didn't drop anything good but it did afford me the opportunity to practice my DPS rotation, and to choose the ugliest transmog I could find. I'd like to thank my boy Slayton from way back for teaching me everything I know.

Unfortunately it became clear I'd need some help with Xavius so I invited my good friends to offer their assistance. After very quickly re-learning how Nightmare Blades works we finished up our Emerald Nightmare progression well ahead of Nighthold. Not bad for 5 hours a week, great job everyone!

Heroic Helya Down! Dec 11, 2016 - 6:24 PM PST

Tonight was our first raid on Sargeras and it was pretty Ausome. We put in about an hour on Heroic Helya and killed it without much issue. Good job everyone, enjoy your night off. Mythic Cenarius, your time is short! I'd have something more clever to say but we keep killing new bosses so fast I can't keep up.

We're still recruiting! We're after some non-Hunter ranged DPS and a healer of the Priest flavor, though we'd take just about anyone with a mana bar at this point. Check our 'Recruitment' section (linked above) for details.

Il'gynoth Down! Dec 7, 2016 - 9:36 PM PST

On the eve of our great migration from Zul'jin to Sargeras we went into Emerald Nightmare for one last raid. We recleared farm content in record time and went back for a few tries on Il'gynoth - after a few close wipes it was very clear we could kill it tonight. We raided a bit later than usual and through great effort and determination we killed our 5th Mythic Emerald Nightmare boss. Amazing job tonight!

We're on our new realm and we're looking for recruits. Please refer to the Recruitment section of the website (directly above) and the list of classes we need (to the right).

As a throwback to our Emerald Dragon domination of years past, this week we focused our efforts on killing them again. And again. And again. Just like 10 years ago. Once we figured out that we didn't need to utilize our phone chain to beat Lux Lucis to the spawns we got it pretty quickly.

While I was writing this news post we also killed Heroic Odyn and Heroic Guarm so that's cool. Great job tonight!

We still need to add some people to our roster, so please apply if your class is listed on the left. You can have our next Nightmare Engulfed Object, they're rotting.

We're back! And we're recruiting Warlocks! Oct 17, 2016 - 8:08 PM PST

Seven years ago Vis Maior hung up our wizard hats and called it quits. Some of us played in other guilds or on other realms, or in other games entirely, but we never lost touch with one another. With the release of Legion a handful of us decided it was time to shake off the rust and make a comeback. After all, Azeroth needs us!

We're taking a much more casual approach this time around, raiding 2 nights a week for a total of 5 hours. We have lots of old friends back with us and a handful of new ones as well. This week we finished clearing Heroic Emerald Nightmare and began progress on Mythic - and we need to add couple of dedicated individuals to our roster!

It wouldn't be Vis Maior if we didn't need a Warlock, but we'd take a Shadow Priest or a Fire Mage as well. We also need a tank class with a melee DPS offspec, and you must be comfortable switching between those roles as necessary. Ideally this would be a Druid or a Warrior.

We raid 9PM - 11PM EST on Wednesdays and 8PM EST - 11PM EST on Sundays. We have a lot of active players on every night of the week for mythic dungeons, mythic+ dungeons, normal mode raids and all manner of other activities. We are playing on Zul'jin as Alliance.

If you're interested in joining come talk to one of our members and they will direct you to an officer!

The End Oct 5, 2009 - 8:19 PM PST

We defeated heroic Anub'arak, and that will be our final victory as a hardcore raiding guild. There was no scandal, no encounter that we couldn't beat, and our roster has 32 active raiders. In fact, we finished TotC poised to do well in Icecrown Citadel.

Why are we throwing in the towel? We realized that a large portion of our raiding core only raids out of dedication and obligation to the rest of the core. Very few of us actually enjoy the game, but no one wants to be that jerk who quits first. With Aion, new babies, and other things wanting our attention, we finally started discussing whether or not hardcore raiding was something our raiding core really wanted. It wasn't. It shows what a great community we have that so many kept playing for so long out of simple loyalty and dedication. Those members who still want to raid at a hardcore level will find new homes. The rest of us will stay on Bonechewer and play casually.

What legacy do we leave behind? In 2005, we wished the horde of Bonechewer an Emerald Christmas. During Black Temple we had every DPS scoring in the top 10 for their class on WWS scoreboard, and at one point we had 4 of the top 5 DPS parses for Teron Gorefiend. We also pioneered the bear cavalry and got a ZA bear mount for every raiding member. During Sunwell PTR we got a ton of publicity for our success and our live stream, WoW Radio interview mp3, interview review, and ptr first drama. We've been at the forefront of PvE progression ever since the beginning with a top 15 on Ragnaros, #12 Nefarian, top 10 C'thun, #3 Ouro, top 25 KT, and #6 KJ. Throughout WotLK we've gotten #3 - #23 on every kill.

  • We've had 5 west coast parties, 4 east coast parties, and attended 3 Blizzcons together.
  • We've had rap battles. (Ventrilo: right click > View > Record / Playback)
  • Kold, Rensy, and Champ played at MLG Dallas in 2008. Interview with Kold (click 'play clip' under interview with Kold)
  • Nearly every new computer in the guild was built according to the specs recommended by Fatfatty and Xender.
  • We've bought computers for two guildies. Desktop Image
  • We play many other games. The list changes constantly, but currently many of us are enjoying HoN, LoL, and Aion.
  • We goof off: Owned in AV Tunnel

This is the end of Vis Maior as a competitive raiding guild in WoW, but it isn't the end of Vis Maior. Our vent is as active as ever with PvP in WoW and nearly our entire roster playing Aion in some capacity. We are also looking forward to Diablo III and SC2. Vis Maior is not just a WoW guild, these past 5 years in WoW as well as the previous 5 years in Everquest have built a community that transcends games.

P.S. Vis Maior is no longer recruiting warlocks.

We finally completed our last Heroic: Glory of the Raider achievement The Immortal. Congrats to everyone on your new 310% speed Reins of the Black Proto-Drake.

More good news: the fixes Blizzard applied to address the Naxxramas instance lag finally had noticeable effect. For the first time in months we were able to raid at our normal time without experiencing crippling lag. Lag seriously detracts from fun, but at least during the recent lag-filled raids we've mastered the following skills:

  • Precognition - We can now predict Thaddius polarity charges before he casts.
  • Time Travel - We can now heal on Loatheb during the negative five seconds intervals.
  • Telepathy - If the raid meditates during the 30 second lag spikes on Noth, we can force the adds to attack tanks through our mental willpower.

Vis Maior and The Burning Crusade Expansion Overview

This expansion isn't over until WotLK comes out, but we've finished the race to kill bosses in TBC, so today is an end of sorts.

Vis Maior started TBC with a roster of 43. 13 of those are still raiding today. We currently have a roster of 32 including recruits. We currently have 4 recruits, 14 members, and 14 veterans (raiders of 1 year or more). We have the same two hunters now as we did on 23 June 2005, but we've been through 14 warlocks in that same timeframe. By the way, we're recruiting warlocks again!

In early TBC, Vis Maior claimed all the first Doom Lord Kazzak and Doomwalker kills on Bonechewer. We wiped a few times, getting "Mark of Death," and while waiting for the 15 minute debuff to fade, we'd make a ring with our flying mounts which we dubbed the "Ring of Death" and force recruits to stand in the ring and duel for membership.

Ever wondered what two white chicks would sound like when forced to rap battle against each other in the most ghetto fashion? No? Well neither did we, but we got to find out! The rest of the world missed out!

Vis Maior met up at Blizzcon 2007 in Anaheim, CA. We listened to the Blizzcon panels, played the WotLK demo, ate, drank, watched movies, and one of us entered the costume contest as a blademaster.

We've always prided ourselves on maintaining a small roster. Instead of recruiting more people, we've geared out existing raiders for multiple specs. We've made extensive use of newly viable hybrid specs such as Retribution Paladins and Moonkin. We aren't afraid to try new things! "Vis Maior uses a Ret Paladin, why don't you?" -- R&D

After we killed Illidan, a few of us pooled money together to buy a new computer for our main tank and guild master Kold, and then we drove to his house to deliver it. The desktop background image was set to this drawing. We couldn't have done nearly as well in Sunwell without him and his new computer! <3!!

After killing Illidan a few times, the amount of downtime before Sunwell began to sink in. We pioneered the bear cavalry, farming a bear mount for every active member and recruit by early February. Every new member still gets a bear mount!

We also decided to go for some top WWS parses on various fights. At the height of our BT/Hyjal WWS days, we had every DPS raider in the top 15 DPS for their class on WWS Scoreboard, and top parses for most fights in BT and Hyjal. Now that KJ is dead, we'll start pumping out some Sunwell WWS parses!

When the 2.4 PTR came out, we had a midnight phone tree and had everyone transferred over within the first day. We managed to get some PTR first kills for Kalecgos through Twins, although only Kalecgos was the same version as released on live. I only wish we had a Flaskataur for our M'uru and KJ progression!

We still have no warglaives in 36 Illidan kills, and no one in guild with warglaives. Maybe we'll get some for to use for Sunwell WWS parses and leveling up to 80? :/

Finally, fuck you, Snoopsic. Quitting with no warning on the day Sunwell is released due to "not enjoying the game" is a really selfish move. I can't believe we ever tagged a person as undedicated as you. Fortunately, we managed Kalecgos through Twins progression only having 1 warlock for most of our raids. Also fortunately, we managed to recruit more warlocks before M'uru.

P.S. We're recruiting warlocks again. Info here. Apply in recruit forums or by PM to Officers.

You know the kind of guild that spends a lot of time on the PTR, kills lots of monsters there, and comes up with lots of different strategies? Well we're that kind of guild. Unfortunately, we're also the kind of guild that gets distracted by dick jokes and doesn't notice small......yet significant ability changes when bosses finally hit live servers. The short version is we just spent the last two days making the fight about twice as hard as it needed to be from a healing perspective, which subsequently forced us to use an additional healer. Oops? Our bad. Needless to say that when we realized our error the boss fell over in a few attempts. In our defense though, we were hitting 2% doing it the hard way!

On a related note, if you're a pro warlock with the gear to match, drop off an application and come do our thinking for us - we clearly need the help.

Little did we know after defeating Illidan, the greatest challenges still lay ahead.

Tonight we faced them head on, in the form of a boss we first killed over four months ago. Maybe it was the recruits, maybe it was the retired members, maybe she just deep breathed a whole hell of a lot more than before. Whatever it was, we eventually manged to stop blowing each other up long enough to grab some rotting loot. Special thanks to everyone who made it really feel like learning MC all over again.

Game Over Sep 25, 2007 - 12:19 AM PST

And thus ends nearly eight months of nonstop raiding. The fight itself is well-designed, second only (arguably) to Kael'thas in complexity and required coordination. On top of that, it requires clicking a trap at a precise time, which brought back nightmares of Magtheridon and nearly made us give up.

We didn't get the chance to take any screenshots before the kill, so here's a professional artist's rendition of the action on our winning attempt.

At one point while Aus happened to be speaking to a GM, we tried looking for a little extra help, but the GM wasn't interested in doing much more than watching.

Simple bribery wasn't working.

You might be a little shocked how quickly we were willing to give away Aus's dignity, but the truth is that he's a total slut and would have done it for free anyway.

Despite that promise we wound up doing it on our own. Being "done" is a nice feeling, one we haven't had for almost a year now. Big grats to everyone involved. Here's looking forward to Sunwell and WotLK, and hoping that Blizzard never, ever again releases three tiers of content simultaneously.

Illidan's Arena Team Sep 18, 2007 - 2:02 PM PST

So the other day, we were working on our weekly clear through Mother Shahraz, just minding our own business, when our buddy Illidan contacted us on AIM. I had Kold send me a log of their conversation, which I'll post here:

XxTheBetrayerXx: Yo, Kold?.
IOfftankForAus: sup
XxTheBetrayerXx: I thought I heard something, are you guys downstairs?
IOfftankForAus: yeah man, we're jus tabout to kill shade, what's up with you?
XxTheBetrayerXx: Not much. Just trying to get my arena points for the week, but I've been lagging bad all day.
IOfftankForAus: yeah we keep having people d/c. it' spretty annoying
IOfftankForAus: wait a minute, wha tdo you need arena points for?
XxTheBetrayerXx: I need a new offhand sword, and there's like nothing even remotely good available before me.
IOfftankForAus: ... that sucks. afk, tea.
XxTheBetrayerXx: It's really bad that I have to spend my little free time grinding points to get a decent weapon. But I'm pretty excited, because I just put a new team together.
XxTheBetrayerXx: I finally found some healers who don't totally blow.
XxTheBetrayerXx: Though I still couldn't convince my priest to drop circle of healing.
XxTheBetrayerXx: And I think the pally might be ret and just not telling me.
XxTheBetrayerXx: And I kinda wish I could trade my rogue for a shaman. WF+bloodlust = win.
XxTheBetrayerXx: And the mage isn't that good either, but she's a chick IRL so it's okay, if you know what I mean. :P
XxTheBetrayerXx: At least she says she's a chick.
XxTheBetrayerXx: She only came onto Vent once, and now her microphone is broken.
XxTheBetrayerXx: I think she likes me though, and I sent her 1000g to help her level her alt. We're having an online date in a few minutes actually.
XxTheBetrayerXx: You still there man?
XxTheBetrayerXx: Hello?
XxTheBetrayerXx: HELLO??
XxTheBetrayerXx: wtf dude.
IOfftankForAus: back
IOfftankForAus: woah. calm down man.
XxTheBetrayerXx: Sorry, I was getting kinda bored talking to myself. So anyway, do you wanna try to queue up at the same time to see if we can get a match?
IOfftankForAus: sure, whatever
XxTheBetrayerXx: Yeah, try to get up here around 11.
IOfftankForAus: k man. peace.

Anyway, we made it there by 11, but Illidan was nowhere to be found. Maybe his e-date didn't go so well? Oh well. His team decided they'd try to just 4-man us, but without a real tank they didn't have much of a chance.

We were still worried about Illidan so we kept exploring. Soon enough we found him moping around on his roof, looking pretty emo. I guess he found out the truth about his new e-girlfriend. If only someone who had been through that kind of experience could have warned him...

I'm glad that's over with. Sep 10, 2007 - 10:20 PM PST

Not really much to say here, other than the fact that I love bandages. Excellent work by everyone learning this fight in about 6 hours, but it really wouldn't have been possible without Webin rerolling a shaman and levelling it up just for this encounter. Victory cupcakes for all!

I'm fairly certain this is not an exploit. Aug 20, 2007 - 9:49 PM PST

But just to be safe I'll share our super top secret plan to defeat the Reliquary of Souls. First we manage - through an excruciatingly constructed combination of finger crossing, Wiccan chanting, and an elaborate scheme involving creative use of fortune cookies - to keep all 25 members of our raid online for the duration of the fight. Then, we let Kold die in phase two, just to lure it into a false sense of security. After that, it seemed easy, and we were moving onto the trash before Mother Shahraz in no time.

Now if you'll excuse me, it's time for a cuddle.

Now that Archimonde has been defeated, we can go... Aug 14, 2007 - 4:45 AM PST

I'm not going to say this was an easy fight. It takes a lot of coordination and practice, and even with both of those, staying alive still requires a large amount of luck. Fears into doomfires, simultaneous airburst and grip. It's pure chaos, and we were struggling. If you don't believe me, just check out this actual footage from one of our early attempts.

How could we prevail in the face of such overwhelming power? We all knew (and by "we all knew" I mean "the lore nerds reminded us") that it was really the Wisps that killed Archimonde the "first" time. And then we started thinking. Hadn't the Bronze Dragonflight sent us back through time, and were we not, in fact, present at the "first" battle? But then when we wiped, wouldn't that mean that Archimonde won the battle? And wouldn't the entire course of history (and the future) have then been altered? And wouldn't the course of events that had allowed us to travel there in the first place (or even exist, for that matter) have never even occurred?

It's enough to make your head spin. The quintessential time-paradox. So naturally, we looked for help from someone who had dealt with this kind of thing before. And in doing so, we even realized that we weren't the first people to come across some nasty doomfire in the course of their time-traveling adventures:

Armed with new knowledge (and a case of plutonium we stole from some Libyan nationalists) we picked ourselves up off the dirt, stood up to Archimonde, and knocked him out like a high-school bully trying to cop a feel on our mom.

The Pit-Lord Azgalor was our latest victim in Mt. Hyjal, and our first chance to get some Tier 6 loot. Archimonde lies ahead.

Hooray for 25 minute boss fights where the prevailing mechanic is kiting the mobs around to be killed by NPCs.

At least the NPCs in the horde camp actually put out some damage, even this guy who was sad he had to sit out by himself for the boss.

I heard these guys have an awesome war-stomp.

Teron Gorefiend, I am... (dead) Jul 15, 2007 - 11:20 PM PST

It was a victory we'd been waiting for since we completed that quest series while levelling up in Shadowmoon Valley. Along the way we had to overcome many obstacles, including attunements, raid-bosses, and our own issues with pet-bars and /cast macros. In the end, we all agree the greatest share of credit goes to Cubee for his amazing strategy/explanation picture:

Dear Jaina, Jul 8, 2007 - 11:33 PM PST

I never thought I'd have to write something like this to you. We were so good together. But I guess it was too good, too perfect to last. I still find it hard to believe after all we've been through. After all the pointless, endless waves of ghouls, abominations, and banshees, we stood strong, together. You held my hand as we watched liches and dreadlords come over that hill, and we survived. We persevered.

But then, after we triumphed against the odds, in our moment of victory, you left me. You left me like a cheap, used-up whore who just remembered she left her dentures soaking in a glass by the bed. You left me to die, alone, like the evil, heartless bitch that you truly are. I stood in the flames as our camp was destroyed, remembering better times, when our love was young. That love is dead. You've ruined everything; you've ruined US. I totally hate you now.

P.S. I lied when I said you were good in bed.

We looted the corpses of Supremus and Shade of Akama. I'd tell a joke, but nothing would be a bigger joke than these two encounters.
